Fourth Annual 
Jansen Volleyball Tournament
 July 6th, 2002

In spite of a blistering 98 degree heat wave, the 4th annual 4th of July weekend volleyball tournament went off without a hitch. This years (5 to) 6 person competition was especially fierce with strong showings from all four teams:

The 6 person competition was shortened from triple to double elimination due to the oppressive heat. In the end, Bonnie's (Team B) prevailed without a single loss.

After gearing up with plenty of sun block and beer, teams braved the elements and put on a spectacular show of grit and determination if not any discernible finesse. However, the close matches made for some awfully long games and some interesting effects due to heat exhaustion. These effects became especially problematic in the final match between A and B, where Bob strained to keep his cool as he watched in dismay while each of his team members in succession failed to find the energy to serve the ball over the net during the critical final moments of the game.  Nevertheless, it was a very close final game (25,21) as was almost every game in the tournament.

After the 6 (5) person competition a cool wind storm blew in and dropped the temperature by about 20 degrees just as the Doubles Tournament was getting started. The doubles tournament was (unintentionally)  a modified double elimination. The most unpredictable doubles team was the Wilberg Matt/Eric combo who seemed able to both dominate and be eliminated by about any team depending on their mood and energy level. They easily overpowered every other team in the tournament at some point, but seemed exhausted or just not in the mood to play by the time they got around to the final and were crushed (15/2) by Bob and Leah (a friend of Lindsey's).
